the only time I ever went there, I had deja vu the whole time.
I went with my mother.
The streets smelled a lot like damp history.
I suppose they don't smell like anything now but damp.
We drove to Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to the churchyard where my great-grandmother was buried. Is buried still, just maybe not under all the same things.
I feel like I met the boy of my dreams, went on one ambiguous coffee date, and then he got hit by a bus.
Only instead of a heart and nice eyes and a dick, I lost a fence where I saw a lizard, an abbey window where I felt ghosts.
And I felt the horrifying chill of the possibility of losing three very real and very dear boys to the storm. Jon, Jesse, and my darling Christopher "C-dog" S., I am so glad to still have you, it stings tears into my eyes. Now I'm just hoping to God I'll get my city back. It's supposed to be my home away from home away from home away from home.

On a lighter note, Montreal was fantastic and Kim was a lovely hostess. Yay francophones!
